For Willdabeast's Will Glazier, his story has alway been about personal triumph and tragedy, the highs and lows of the hustling musician. Success couldn't be happening to a more deserving artist, as Glazier fuels Michal Menert & The Pretty Fantastics' horn section alongside bandmate Dan de Lisle, and the pair hurtle towards the Super Best Records release of Stay The Course on November 8th.
Glazier's path to redemption crosses with that of San Diego's hottest underground rappers, Rob Hurt and Burke Baby, better known as Vokab Kompany, who have paired with a number of producers from our corner of the electronic music industry to great effect (most notably on Stone Soul's "If You Please," a future funk tour de force).
On this chill, hip-hop cut, "Way Back (Different Dawn)" Vokab does what it does best, and Willdabeast supports with laidback horns, and some slick guitar work. It's a master class in how not to overproduce a good beat, letting the rhyme-slingers do the heavy lifting. No need to oversell it, just go in there and lay down a solid groove. Sounds like the Kompany knows exactly the kind of vibe Glazier is on.
The six-piece Menert band rolls into Portland, OR tonight, and Eugene, OR tomorrow night, with a stop in Arcata, CA on Sunday. You'll be able to grab the album this coming Tuesday from the Super Best label around.
