One of the fiercest forces in the burgeoning psychedelic dub movement is David Starfire. The veteran producer, drummer, and multi-instrumentalist is a fixture on the festival circuit, and a pillar of the global bass community.
Today, Starfire's follow-up to Ascend (2013), Awakening, makes its debut on Amrita Recordings. The eight-song collection blazes back and forth from glitch-hop to downtempo musings, covering a wide swath of the bass music map.
Indigenous instruments, ancient throat singing, are tribal percussion are all present among the synthetic elements, really crafting a cohesive, natural flow.
Collaboration is clearly the name of the game. The most powerful track on the album, "Duality" features haunting hammered dulcimer courtesy of Jamie Janover. A remix of "Sharaj" from Kaya Project is included on the album (and, boy, is it funky). Fianlly, Starfire includes a remix of his own, using Kalya Scintilla's source material "Veer La Lutz" as inspiration. Ganga Giri and Inner Forest also guest on the album.
The album is available for free for the next three weeks, so get on it. Visit David Starfire's Bandcamp page at http://davidstarfiremusic.bandcamp.com/album/awakening-free-put-0-for-amount to grab this one before your time's up!
