We've been checking in periodically on the bass music scene in Philly, just because things are changing so quickly, and so many interesting acts are popping out of there regularly. One of those is Sam Andrus, who has been on our radar for a while.
5AM has been on the outskirts of the psychedelic bass realm, taking on jazzier, more lo-fi, chill-hop elements in his orbit. On May 15, he drops the Onward EP with The Rust Music, which features five tracks that are very much Andrus being Andrus, which is exactly what we've wanted to hear.
Today, we premiere “Peel Back,” which features fellow Philly act Keith Wadsworth of Wax Future on guitar. We haven't really heard a fresh take on electro-soul with guitar in this way in a very long time, especially as many producers are folding their tastes and output back upon themselves into very rudimentary, early dubstep culture. Then again, 5AM isn't one to do what the others are doing.
Catch him at Kinnection Campout, Elements Lakewood, and Solasta this summer.
