THE FLYING SKULLS

Check your radar good citizens, that blip you see fast approaching is none other than The Flying Skulls, a nu-school three piece that plays live improvisational dub-step, breaks, and electro! The group brings the future-soundz of the modern dance music studio and interpolates them through the filter of live improv. With an old school jazz ethos The Skulls combine their tightly-honed electronic and hiphop infused sonic orchestra in a most dirty and crunked-out way.

The Flying Skulls first started melting dance floors in April 2008. Originally the brainchild of Lowpro Lounge co-founder Jeff Wareham (J.Tonal) as a way to bring the precision of the recording studio to the dance floor. J.Tonal had been creating music and throwing events in the SF Bay Area for over 7 years, sharing billing with musicians such as DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, Shpongle, Ott, Jack Dangers from Meat Beat Manifesto, and UFO! Growing up in the foothills of Northern California, J.Tonal was forced at an early age to go in search of a different sound. After moving to LA and immersing himself in the Hip Hop and Electronic music scenes, he started producing in a style that crossed between those two genres. In 1999 he moved to SF and met up with James Christopher, founding the Lowpro Lounge, throwing over 200 events all over the world, and starting the innovative record label Lowpro Lounge Recordings. "The Skulls live is all crusher material. You’ve got a totally improv beat over here, and a live bass line over here, and I’m in the middle dropping a lead, and grabbing pieces of the other performances and cutting them up… really giving the listener an experience." J.Tonal’s tracks form the root of the Skulls sound, and by all accounts, they’re getting bigger, badder, and more fun to dance to.

Another longtime Skulls collaborator is San Francisco's quadruple-threat DJ, Producer, MC, and visual artist Citizen Ten (aka The Zap Tap aka Justin Smith). This diabolical scratch-wizard came-up in Southern California, and has been making music and rocking out with other Southland beat junkies like Flying Lotus, The Gaslamp Killer, Samiam, as well as DJing behind Abstract Rude and sharing billing with DJ Logic, The Glitch Mob, and N.E.R.D. Citizen Ten is a well known taste-maker in SF, co-founding the longtime oasis for west coast bass music: Change the Beat with local legend DJ Centipede (aka Mophono), and scratching on remixes for STS9 and Lotus. The man's record collection is dark and mysterious and it's hard to find someone better at complicated melody and rhythm scratching. His fader-gymnastics lends the butter of analog-love to the Skulls sonic weaponry.

Straight dope on these Flying Skulls guys? They’re dirty. Dirty beats, dirty grimy low-end, mucked up distorted synthesizers, live syncopated beats flipping between 4/4, 3/4, and 7/8 time. The Skulls distill these elements through their battle-tested mix interface into dancefloor-rending sets of huge beats with a cinematic depth meant for the very largest of soundsystems. Chromekids recently described their sound as, "A heavyweight collection of nasty synths, wobbly basslines and crunked out glitchy beats so dirty you'd swear they robbed their MPC players off a crack dealer."

LOVE & LIGHT

Both hailing from the western half of the United States, Probiotik and 4centers connected in Reno Nevada to create Love and Light. Years ago the two had thrown a few rave style parties in the outdoors of northern Nevada in the empty Black Rock Desert and Mystical Pyramid Lake. After looking outward to seek music that touched their hearts they searched inward and found music that elevated their souls. Knowing all along that producing and performing was the lifestyle they wanted to have they stumbled upon many great festivals that inspired them to become what they are today. Six months ago the two decided that combining forces and using each other to push one another was the best way to make their dreams come true. After a few good tracks had been produced, they knew they we're on the right path. Probiotik's Ghost N Stuff Remix put them on the map and 4centers' Eleanor Rigby Remixx is traveling them that map. With interests mainly in the glitch crunk mid tempo side of things, the two are learning to produce and perform at multiple tempos and different styles. Bringing high energy to the stage and elevating music through the speakers Love and Light has just begun. Now collaborating with Marty Party and a few others the duo can only imagine what the future holds…

ChrisB.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, ChrisB. had Westcoast flavor from day one. A musician at a young age, ChrisB.'s life experiences have shaped the music he creates. Although new to the game, his obsessive musical passion is palpable in the original sonic beauties he creates. Exploring deep hypnotic textures with a side order of bass, his sexually charged live performances are psychedelic treats that can only be described as "quantum crunk." There is nothing that can get in the way of this determined young producer. Rolling with crews like Portal Patch and Headtron, we would all do well to keep a weather eye on the horizon for the future of sound.

Johnny5

Although you might not recognize the face behind the layers of wobbling bass, crunchy drums, and hypnotic melodies, it's safe to say that Johnny5 is no stranger to the spotlight. An Oakland, CA resident, by way of Chicago, Johnny cut his teeth as an MC and hip-hop producer in both cities, sharing stages with the likes of independent legends Typical Cats as well as major acts including Raekwon and Devin the Dude.

Upon moving to Oakland in 2005, Johnny5 began to take in the diverse, quickly evolving sounds pulsating throughout the Northern California music scene. Already having an extensive background in hip-hop, reggae, and electronic music, it was only natural that Johnny would embrace the dubstep genre and begin to cultivate his own sound, taking elements from each of these musical cultures. After a series of mixes that remained vastly unheard, the world began to take notice after his first official release, "Johnny 5 Alive."

Armed with his trusty APC 40, vast collection of rare and exclusive tracks, and uncanny ability to read a crowd's mood, Number 5 is ready to spread his unique blend of filthy bass music styles to dance floors and festivals around the West Coast and worldwide!
