The #19 Artists In The World

COSMIC GATE

Black Hole Recordings

Cosmic Gate's 2009 has been one largely geared around the release of 'Sign Of The Times', their fourth artist album. It's been backed, says Stefan Bossems, by an incredible run of release parties all over the world.

"It's definitely been our busiest DJing year ever," he smiles. "We had an amazing early summer tour in the US, playing 14 gigs in four weeks."

"Some great nights in Ibiza too!" adds partner, Nic Chagall.

So where have they felt the EDM pulse beat strongest this year? "Probably the States," Nic muses, as Bossi chuckles, "Yeah, you'd have to say that about a place where you've played 40 times in the last 12 months!"

'Sign Of The Times' and associated gigging aside, Cosmic Gate have found plenty of time for remixing this year.

"We've worked on tracks by Armin, Paul van Dyk, John O'Callaghan, Markus Schulz, Fabio XB and Kyau & Albert so far, and they've all had a very good reception when we've played them out," says Nic.

As DJmag went to press, the lads were preparing for the Godskitchen Australia tour.

"We're going to play on the amazing Boombox stage! We've not been to Australia for nearly two years and that makes us look forward to it all the more.

"Next year will see our mix series 'Back 2 Back', er, back and then it'll be full steam ahead a new artist album." - DJ Mag

The #24 Artist In The World

JOHN O'CALLAGHAN

Armada

Amiable Irish trance DJ John O'Callaghan is as happy to sing the praises of other DJs and producers as he is to receive his own accolades. Talking about his summer smash 'Find Yourself' featuring Sarah Howells, it's the 'Cosmic Gate Remix' he's keen to flag up.

Although John is at ease delivering big room slayers from his Dublin studio, the task of producing his own artist album, 'Never Fade Away', this year was more of a challenge.

"To sit down and write 11 new tracks and come up with new melodies and vocals and spend all that time in the studio was quite daunting," says John. "But it was very enjoyable in the end."

In fact, John already has ideas bubbling away for a follow-up that he'll start next year for release in 2011.

John plays out every single weekend of the year, not that he's complaining.

"I'm very happy to have this job, it's an absolute privilege, and I enjoy every second of it. The only hard bit is travelling, but apart from that everything else is amazing."

Playing this year's Trance Energy festival, in Holland, was extra special, he says.

"I played on the main stage and the production and the lighting was just unbelievable. A load of people from Ireland came over and it really was the gig of a lifetime."

He also achieved another personal best by making his debut at Ibiza club Amnesia for Cream.

"It's a Mecca for a lot of DJs and it was a milestone for me."
