The music of Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd) is not easy to remix. His unmistakable brand of R&B tells gritty tales of strippers, drugs, success, and one-night stands, while hypnotizing his listeners. Tesfaye’s lyrics often use storytelling as a key competent, and remixing this often destroys its natural ebb and flow. Countless producers have tested their hand at remixing The Weeknd, but only a few have succeeded in retaining the core components that make his music so potent.
When Bronze Whale (Austin) and Ianborg (British Columbia) are working together, though, anything is possible. “Twenty Eight” gently kickstarts with haunting piano chords, before repeating Tesfaye’s mournful vocals stating “This house is not a home to you.” Tantalizing synth progressions than gracefully take hold of your undivided attention, before unveiling a subtle yet provocative drop. The poetic journey of Testaye’s addicting lyrics remains intact, while achieving uncharted realms of emotion.
The Weeknd is not simply a person, but an unconscious state where hindrance and heartache vanish into oblivion. Bronze Whale and Ianborg retain this inexplicable phenomenon, while continually knocking potent revamps out the park.
