Favorite ThisStephan Jacobs & NiT GriT - Pizza Party (Free Release)

Published: June 13, 2011

When I was in grade school, the mere mention of a pizza party would make my heart flutter. I'd keep my mouth shut, spell words correctly, stop eating paste--whatever it would take to make that pizza party happen. Cheese, pepperoni, sausage, it didn't matter. A pizza party is more than a free slice when you're supposed to be doing work. It's a way of life.

Imagine how my heart was set aflutter once again, more than two decades after my first pizza party, when I heard that SoCal had joined forces with MidCal, that two of the biggest and baddest bass music producers were teaming up to bring me my very own Pizza Party, once again. So here I am, sitting here with a free slice instead of getting work done.

Stephan Jacobs and NiT GriT have been burning up dance floors with lazerbass and glitched out beats for a while now, but unified effort of these two mega-beatsmiths is overwhelming. Consistent in their sound on two of the three tracks is GriT's unique bass wobble. Part machine, part alien--whatever it is, it's there. On Pizza Party's opener, "Walk on Out," we have typical house-type ambience with sparse, snappy drums. The second of three tracks, "Don't Stop," still has the GriTty bass and signature echoey synth, but it feels like Jacobs takes the lead on this track, with its sultry female vocals, and glitchy vibe.

The StephaNiT duo (doesn't it roll off your tongue like Brangelina?) takes a sharp turn from both of their bodies of work with the remix of Metric's "Gold Guns Girls." A glitchy wobble rides a more-or-less straight beat through the song, pausing for a chill little d'n'b turn before finally settling into a sugary, popstep rhythm. The sheer buoyancy of the track is way far removed, certainly from Mr. Beall's serious musings on his releases. Stephan Jacobs hasn't had quite so dark a reputation, but this upbeat re-hashing certainly does hearken back to that pizza party vibe. And I didn't even have to stop eating paste.
