Favorite ThisDopapod prepares for massive fall tour across northeast, southeast, and midwest

Published: August 23, 2013

Thundering across the Northeast, Southeast, and Midwest this fall, the four-headed rock monster Dopapod hits the road again with its celebrated live show in tow. Blending technical skills with genre-defying stews of jazz, metal, and funk, guitarist Rob Compa, drummer Neal Evans, bassist Chuck Jones, and keyboardist Eli Winderman have thrilled audiences coast-to-coast with their dogmatic dedication to the groove.

Breaking out of basements and backwoods bars, Brooklyn-based Dopapod hits major festivals and prestigious clubs and theaters across the land with some of the country’s most in-demand touring acts PapadosioZoogma, and The Werks. Sets at Hyperion,Catskill Chill, and Bear Creak Music Festival ice the four-piece’s tireless touring through some of the hottest venues east of the Mississippi. The presence of lighting and sound designer Luke Stratton on each and every stop ties in audio wizardry with breathtaking visual accompaniment that guarantees fans the total Dopapod sensory package.

The palindromic obsession (the band’s last few releases include 2012’s Redivider, 2011’s Drawn Onward, and the live album I Saw Live Dopapod Evil Was I) isn’t limited to tongue in cheek titles. Deeper still is the quartet’s front to back, multidirectional writing and performance style. Musical ideas germinated on stage find their way into studio sessions, which blend and morph until the ideas are returned to the stage having evolved through a thousand iterations—though the meaning stays the same.

Years of touring and hundreds of shows under its collective belt have given Dopapodthe telepathic connection necessary to pull off the high wire act the stage show demands each night. Totally live, with no pre-produced elements and only a skeletal setlist, each member dips into his wealth of influence and ability to not only pull of incredibly intricate maneuvers, but elevate the level of songwriting on stage and under the gun. The result is a deeply technical yet utterly human performance.
