Favorite This20 in 30: Freq Nasty - "Bon Merde"

Published: August 11, 2011

Now in its second day, TheUntz.com 2011 Digital Music Sampler is going strong. We are continuing to feature each of our 20 sampler tracks over the next 30 days. The second track comes courtesy of legendary New Zealand-native and producer FreQ Nasty. Darin McFadyen has been in the game for a long, long time, spending the bulk of his early career in the U.K. working in the then nascent breakbeat scene. Producing monster tracks through the 90's and into the 00's, it was time for FreQ Nasty to break into a new scene, and become a vanguard for another genre: dubstep. FreQ has also gained notoriety for his charitable work with Giveback.net and his collaborations with yesterday's featured artist Bassnectar.

As with many of his heavy-hitters, McFadyen pays homage to the pioneers of whatever genre he's attempting. "Bon Merde" is very forward-thinking, while still maintaining a very U.K.-sound with his dubstep. Careful with the drop. FreQ throws some wicked drum 'n' bass breaks underneath the screaming high-frequency wobble. There's nothing more that we can say besides what's already in the title (if you translate it from French): Good shit.
