MR. CARMACK

Mr Carmack aka Aaron Carmack is a Hawaii-based producer blurring the distinction between Hip Hop and Dance Music in a progressive way that has even the most seasoned producers scratching their heads. His current rise to fame started with the self-released Bang, Vol 3 followed by the Life/Death EP, which both achieved the #1 best selling album on Bandcamp consecutively. Supported by the likes of RL Grime, GTA, Plastician, Djemba Djemba, S Type, Elair Fifi as well as appearances on BBC Radio 1, Mr. Carmack's global domination has only just begun.

KELELA

Alternative R&B vocalist and songwriter Kelela Mizanekristos was raised in suburban Maryland, and didn't have aspirations as a singer until she started studying jazz. Subsequent obsessions with Amel Larrieux and Little Dragon helped push her toward finding her own style -- one she found after she moved to Los Angeles. She connected with Teengirl Fantasy and contributed to the duo's Tracer album on the song "EFX." This led to meeting the Fade to Mind label's Prince William, who exposed her to his associates' lean yet sharp and deep productions. Knocked out by what she heard, she provided vocals for Kingdom's August 2013 single "Bank Head" (taken from the Vertical XL EP). With contributions from Fade to Mind and Night Slugs producers such as Kingdom, Bok Bok, Girl Unit, Jam City, and Nguzunguzu, Kelela sought to make a mixtape of tracks that sounded like remixes.

Kelela’s mixtape CUT 4 ME was released on October 1st, 2013 on producer Kingdom’s Fade to Mind label. Of her mixtape, she says to Rookie Mag, “I will work with all of these producers for all of my life. This mixtape is the first time I was ever able to say exactly what I meant to say. It’s a statement.”

MAJICAL CLOUDZ

Majical Cloudz is music and performance. Rooted in solo material written by Devon Welsh between rural Ontario and Montreal, he joined with Matthew Otto in February 2012 to collaboratively produce and perform the music.

Their performance is deeply expressive — strong vocals sit on top of washes of white noise, filtered synths and sparse thuds. The songs are intensely lyrical, oriented around themes of death, patience, family, and desire. The live show celebrates the joy in sadness and the value of a shared musical experience.

In May 2012, Majical Cloudz released II, an album of Welsh’s vocal melodies largely buried under impressionistic synths, loops, samples, and snippets. The album was followed in December by the Turns Turns Turns EP, an audacious distillation of Welsh’s ideas that brought his vocals to the fore. “Musically, I wanted to try saying ‘no’ to possibilities, and create negative space in the songs,” he says. “To put the emphasis on the voice and lyrics.”

Pitchfork said the EP “trusts in simple pop melodies and never feels a need to obscure the most enjoyable elements of these songs.” (The song “What That Was” was named Best New Track.)
