Guillermo Scott Herren is nothing if not proven. It’s hard to think of a name that carries as much weight in both hip-hop and avant-rock circles as Prefuse 73, who in the past year alone has been asked to remix TV On The Radio, Pelican, BLK JKS, Cornelius, and producing the L.A. duo: “Voices Voices” e.p. on Manimal Records. Not to mention his collaborations with School of Seven Bells and Battles. These interactions have clearly helped to shape the evolving Herren’s sonic aesthetic, which has expanded to include Diamond Watch Wrists twisted visions of prog-rock & “machine funk” and Savath y Savalas global psychedelia. This past year has taken him on a whirlwind of of shows and tours in a number of configurations around the world and back. South America, Japan, random lofts in the middle of nowhere and so on.

It’s been three years since the release of Nosaj Thing’s highly acclaimed debut album, Drift, which topped countless Best Of Year Lists, but 2013 will mark a new chapter for the 27-year-old producer, musician and DJ from Los Angeles. With a new album, label and imprint for Innovative Leisure, Home marks the first time Nosaj has incorporated guest vocalists. Having remixed and worked with the likes of The XX, Flying Lotus, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Beck & Kendrick Lamar, it was time to incorporate a few collaborations of his own with Toro y Moi and Kazu Makino (Blonde Redhead) providing ethereal vocals for two of the tracks on Home. The rest of the album is rounded with Nosaj’s signature cinematic soundscapes that explore the space from where Drift left off.

Drew Cyrus Lustman is a musician in love with complexity and beautiful simplicity alike. On the one hand, the 26-year-old one-time sushi chef grew up playing piano and upright bass in jazz and classical groups, and cites Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Squarepusher and Weather Report as life-changing influences; on the other, he loves clubs, loves to dance, and considers hip hop, house, jungle and UK garage to be as important as any of those virtuoso musicians. Drew still has the yen to make wild jungle, and one day maybe he’ll end up back in smoky jazz clubs. But right now, he’s still as in love with current club music as the scene is with him, slipping easily between and ahead of new genre collisions even as they happen. It takes improvisatory skills to deal with a musical world that shifts and reconfigures as wildly as that of 2010 – but if anyone has those skills it’s FaltyDL
