Olympic Valley is a small village just north of Lake Tahoe in California. Olympic Valley is better known as Squaw Valley because it is the home of the world-famous ski resort, Squaw Valley USA. Squaw Valley USA is one of the largest and most high-concept ski areas in the United States and was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. It boasts highly advanced chairlifts, a cable car and the only Funitel in the United States. The resort attracts 600,000 skiers a year. Its usual run for skiing is from mid-November to late May. The resort operates year-round, offering various activities in both winter and summer, including an ice skating rink, a swimming lagoon and spa, fine dining, hiking, horseback riding, golf, and tennis. Perched atop the Sierra Nevadas, with a base of 6,200 feet and spread across 6 peaks and 4,000 acres, Squaw tops out at 9,050 feet above sea level at Granite Chief. The resort often receives 40 or more feet of snow in winter, but the summers are dry and mild, with cool mornings typically giving way to day temperatures in the 70s or low 80s.
