Date: Jun 20, 2012 (Wednesday)By: Jordan Calvano
On June 8th 2010, the Chicago based trio known as Krewella decided to drop their jobs and quit school to pursue the music they loved making full time. This date marks the beginning of the groups rise to glory, and in a bold move is tattooed on all three members.
Since then, Krewella has gone from a gang of wild kids to, well a gang of wild kids who are now making a huge dent on America’s bass culture with a unique sound that encapsulates a slew of different genres layered under passionate vocals. Rain Man producers the groups incredibly tenacious beats, while sisters Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf write and belt out tantalizing lyrics that strike a perfect balance between poppy and remarkably intense. This formula for success has been working like a charm as of late, which can be heard on fast paced reworkings of Skrillex and Knife Party, and on an eclectic collab with the boys of Adventure Club that is sure to fill the ears of festival goers across the country this summer.
On the group’s debut EP, Play Hard, we witness the three artists taking their sound to all new uncharted territories with a release chalked full of breathtaking original tracks.
Opening up the EP is the title track, which is an electro house banger layered with pulsating lyrics that describe a night out on the town ragin’ at the bars. Energetic drops strike throughout the song in their own unique way, which helps the track progress while avoiding a repetitive flow.
“One Minute” contains mesmerizing synth lines that guide the way for the ladies to unleash their sensual and emphatic vocals on the world as the cut fluctuates from a slow paced jam into a ragin’ anthem that will have any crowd bumpin’ and grinding their way through the night.
“Alive” strikes with gentle keys which will entrance anyone tuned in with a track that will quickly prove how fast Krewella has improved, and how far they have come in such a short time.
Play Hard is an enthralling EP from three musicians who are releasing jaw-dropping tunes, and having a great time doing it.
